Styles of Chastity Cages:  While I haven't tried them all, here is a break down of the various types of cages and what their Pros / Cons are:

DURATION: 
A couple hours, up to a day or two. 

VISIBILITY: 
Longer/medium varieties will be more obvious when fully clothed. Shorter nub cages shouldn’t show much at all.

CONS:
Not suitable for long-term wear. Because this ring style does not properly conform to the shape of a human body, it will always feel like an alien object hanging off your genitals. Walking may be cumbersome at times, and it will be harder to focus on day to day tasks. Sitting down and standing up can even be tricky at times.  Escape is also much easier due to the non-ergonomic form factor, and larger space for balls. Even if you are self-locking, knowing you could easily slip out of a cage is defeating the whole concept of chastity. This style also tends to be noisier.

If your desire is to prevent erections completely - these devices aren’t a good choice. They often have bars which a sub can stroke himself thru, and generally there’s more room for the dick to grow. Although it won’t feel great, if left unsupervised, with a wire cage of this style, a sub could easily work himself up to a half way pleasurable orgasm, or pull out completely.

PROS:

(See above) but unlike the flat circle ring cages, these are designed to conform to the human body, which means ease of wear, less unintended pain, and less awkwardness.  And all of that means the possibility of a longer duration. However the medium to large sized ones may prevent extended long term wear due to weight alone. But the airflow is ideal for the wired cages, meaning hygiene is less of an issue.

If you want to start your collection with metal, go for an ergonomic ring. It’s the obvious next evolution in design and you get both wearability and heft. If I could bend my circle rings into ergo-shapes, I would.

Flat circular ring styles will be more visible than ergonomic styles but both have relatively low visibility.

CONS:
Plastic or Resin based cages vary greatly in construction style. The traditional CB-X style (picture in far right above) is not a bad cage, but it comes with way too many tiny pieces. You’re essentially wearing a lego set on your dick. Because of that it feels less sturdy and is tedious to install/remove.  All those fitted pieces create countless nooks and crannies for skin and hair to get pinched.  Plus it’s a flat circle ring, which doesn’t naturally  fit against the body as well. 

In general, Plastic cages are so light, the sub may at times forget he is even wearing one. If your goal is to really drive the point home with a constant reminder of the fact that you control his manhood, metal will accomplish this better.  Plastic cages also require thought in regards to getting your dick in and out.  Will you use lube? If so do you really want your dick lubed up 24/7?  There are methods of getting them on dry but it can cause pain if the environment down there isn’t just right. If your dickhead sticks to the plastic for example, it can be uncomfortable or chafe.

PROS:
Plastic/Resin cages are lightweight and if you get one with an ergonomic ring, they can be worn very long term. They are easily hidden under clothing, and you can go about your day functioning as a normal human being.  I even workout in one while I’m on a lock-up. Plus they come in all colors shapes and sizes. Find one with a good snug fit but not too tight and you can easily find your ideal chastity zone. These cages typically come with a lot of ring size options which makes them good for beginners who might not know exactly what size to go for.
